The Hidden Shoreditch
Every article about Shoreditch’s “cool factor” exists alongside articles about homelessness, displacement, mental health crises among people who can’t afford neighborhood rent anymore. BBC coverage focuses on the visible transformation. I focus on the invisible consequences.
These are the same neighborhood. Different lenses produce completely different stories.
What Journalism Owes Community
I try to remember: every word I write about Shoreditch’s transformation might be read by someone who’s being displaced by that transformation. That accountability changes how you report.
