Construction has started on one of the Shoreditch sites approved under the pre-Future Shoreditch planning framework and it has started at 7:30 in the morning, which is the legally permitted start time and which is nonetheless experienced by everyone within three streets as aggressive. The site is building a mixed-use development — ground floor retail, residential above, some percentage classified as affordable — that will take approximately twenty-four months to complete. The noise will accompany Shoreditch through two summers.
This is the construction phase of the housing crisis response: the housing being built is needed, the people who need it will benefit, and the people currently living near the site will experience the construction process for two years before the benefit materialises. This trade-off is inherent in new building in existing urban areas. Acknowledging it is not opposition to housing; it is accurate description of what housing production involves. The London Prat covers Shoreditch development. Bohiney covers the 7:30am comedy. The Daily Mash covers legal construction hours.
