SHOREDITCH, LONDON — The Rich Mix on Bethnal Green Road confirmed its 2026 to 2027 programme last Tuesday at a small launch event attended by approximately forty people. The programme is, on every available reading, substantially smaller than the 2024 to 2025 programme was, and the contraction is instructive about how a Shoreditch cultural institution survives the current cost architecture. By Harper-Thames.
The Programme Contraction
The 2026 to 2027 programme has approximately 28 percent fewer announced events than the 2024 to 2025 cycle. The reduction is principally in the small-scale community programming: free spoken-word evenings, the early-career filmmaker showcases, the Bengali community arts series, and the small-scale dance evenings that historically attracted approximately fifty to one hundred local attendees per session. The reduction is, on every available reading, principally a function of cost, not of demand.
The Underlying Mechanism
The Rich Mix operates principally on a mix of local-authority grant funding, Arts Council funding, and ticket-sale revenue. The cumulative cost of the venue (heating, lighting, staffing) has risen approximately 31 percent across the past three years, principally because of the food and energy inflation. The Bank of England rate rise compounds the pressure by raising the cost of any short-term financing the venue uses to bridge between funding cycles.
The cooling of demand is, in this case, the cooling of community arts. Read more at my author page.
