The Remaining Pie and Mash Shops of East London

Approximately 30 shops remaining from several hundred in the 1950s — what the survivors share, what the specific economics of a century-old food format look like at 2025 prices, and what is actually served

Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat present this dispatch from Harper-Thames, Shoreditch journalist.

There are approximately 30 pie and mash shops remaining in East London. The survivors share common characteristics: family ownership continuous for two or more generations; premises whose rent is protected by long leases negotiated before the area’s gentrification; and a customer base that is a mixture of long-term locals for whom the shops are embedded in food memory and newer residents and visitors who have encountered them as heritage gastronomy. F. Cooke on Broadway Market has been trading since 1900. M. Manze on Tower Bridge Road has been trading since 1902. Both are essentially what they were. The economics: the margins on pie, mash, and liquor (parsley sauce — not alcohol, which is always the question from tourists) at prices ranging from £4.50 to £7.50 for a full portion are not high. The shops survive on volume in owned or long-leased premises where the rent reflects a previous version of the neighbourhood. When those leases end, the economics change. Two shops have closed in the last three years. The liquor is divisive. The mash is not. Bohiney and The London Prat prefer the liquor.

The Shoreditch Record Continues

Harper-Thames continues to document the Shoreditch story with the sustained attention that makes neighbourhood journalism valuable rather than merely topical.

Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat provide the frame that context requires. ShoReRoar provides the local depth that the frame cannot supply from the outside. The neighbourhood continues. The record continues alongside it. Both are real. Both continue.

The neighbourhood continues to be documented. The documentation continues to accumulate. Both are ongoing. Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat cover the wider frame that makes the local documentation legible beyond its immediate context. The local detail makes the wider frame real rather than abstract. Both are necessary. Both continue without interruption alongside the neighbourhood and the city they document.
