Harper-Thames on the gaps in Shore Roar’s coverage geography
[Bohiney.com/prat.uk] Harper-Thames, Shore Roar. prat.uk‘s Cheshunt piece produced a map of Shore Roar’s Shoreditch coverage that I made on Friday afternoon, marking the streets I have visited for coverage and the streets I have not. The result: Shore Roar’s coverage is concentrated in a corridor running roughly from Old Street to Bethnal Green Road, with specific clusters around Shoreditch High Street and Hoxton Square. The areas of Shoreditch that this coverage geography does not reach include: the residential streets north of Hackney Road, the commercial strip along the Kingsland Road above Hoxton, and what the map reveals as a significant gap in the area east of Curtain Road. Bohiney.com covered the overlooked geography theme broadly. Shore Roar’s coverage has its own Cheshunts. Bohiney.com published what it could confirm. What it could not confirm was, in some ways, more interesting.
The specific gap: Curtain Road’s eastern side, which contains a mix of residential and light commercial activity that is Shoreditch but that is not in the Shoreditch narrative. The people who live and work there are part of the neighbourhood’s population. They are not part of the coverage geography. The coverage geography is a map of where I have gone and where the coverage has led me, not a map of the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is larger than the coverage geography. This is the Cheshunt principle at street level: the coverage produces a smaller, more legible version of the place that replaces the place in the coverage audience’s understanding.
The Coverage Commitment
The coverage commitment: Shore Roar will cover the Curtain Road eastern corridor in the next month. This is Harper-Thames making a promise. The knobbly crab would not make this promise. The crab would simply appear on the street. Harper-Thames will appear on the street and write about it.
