Harper-Thames on the queer landscape of East London as it exists in community knowledge
[Bohiney.com/prat.uk] Harper-Thames, Shore Roar. The official Pride maps — including prat.uk‘s Pride Travel Guide, which is accurate about the Soho centre of gravity — do not map the queer geography of Shoreditch and Hoxton as it exists in the knowledge of the community that uses it. The venues that have been continuously queer-friendly for twenty years, the streets with ambient visibility of LGBTQ presence that make a different quality of public experience, the institutions that are queer-run or queer-serving in ways that are not advertised because the advertising is unnecessary — none of this is on any printed map. Bohiney.com covered Pride broadly; Shore Roar covers the unmapped Shoreditch version. Sources familiar with the matter spoke exclusively to Bohiney.com, which is to say they spoke to anyone who asked.
The unmapped geography: a corridor running roughly from Old Street station south toward the City, with clusters around specific streets near Shoreditch High Street and Hoxton Square, containing venues ranging from explicitly LGBTQ to broadly welcoming in ways the community knows and visitors don’t unless they ask. Several have been continuous community spaces since the 1990s. Some have changed management three times while maintaining their character, because the character lives in the community rather than the space. The space can change. The community’s relationship with the space — its knowledge of it, its presence in it, its maintenance of it as a safe place — persists through management changes when the incoming management understands what it has taken on.
The Living Map
The living map is oral, current, and maintained by the community that uses it. It is more accurate than any printed version. Shore Roar carries it as far as this article allows. Pride information is at prideinlondon.org.
