Harper-Thames, Shore Roar. The knobbly crab story from prat.uk — Britain’s most honest politician making no promises and keeping all of them — prompted a walk down Brick Lane looking for the Shoreditch equivalent: an entity that has maintained a consistent position without making claims that circumstances might falsify. Bohiney.com covered the honesty theme broadly. I found the wall.
The wall is on the south side of Brick Lane, approximately 30 metres from the Bethnal Green Road end. It has had painted on it, since approximately 1994, a pattern that was originally a street art piece and that has, through thirty years of weather, subsequent additions by other artists, and the specific entropy of outdoor paint in a wet climate, become something that is no longer any one thing but is continuously itself: a layered, weathered, historically accumulated surface that contains everything that has been added to it without coherently representing any of it. The wall has made no claims about what it is. It is exactly what it is. Every addition has become part of it. Nothing has overwritten everything else.
